City of Antwerp - Het Steen

Antwerp’s oldest building “Het Steen” is a centuries-old fortress that houses a visitor center and a cruise terminal. To welcome the tourists and help them find their way around the city, we made an interactive maquette of Antwerp’s city center. The fully 3D printed model offers a playful and accessible way to explore the most exciting tourist hot spots in Antwerp.

Visitors simply place one of the red buildings on a pedestal and an invisible RFID tag instantly triggers an animation that reveals the story behind the building. From the Central Station, the MoMu or the Town Hall, every red building represents an iconic landmark in Antwerp.

Originally, the 3D printed installation was developed for the Flanders Technology & Innovation Festival (FTI) in Antwerp. At the festival, the red buildings represented innovative projects across the city, allowing visitors to discover them through short animated stories activated in the same intuitive way.

After the installation attracted thousands of visitors and received overwhelmingly positive feedback, the City of Antwerp decided to give the maquette a permanent place at Het Steen. We redesigned the experience so it continues to engage visitors today, turning a complex city story into an accessible, interactive and memorable experience for all ages.
